Challenge: Specialized Offshore Requirements
Packard faced a unique challenge when tasked with designing a side-entry swivel for a project offshore of Brazil. The requirements were specific and demanding, necessitating a solution that could withstand extreme conditions while maintaining optimal performance.
Exploration: Collaborating with Kalsi Engineering
Recognizing the complexity of the task, Packard sought expertise. They partnered with Kalsi Engineering, known for their Hydrodynamic Seal Technology. Together, they embarked on a journey to create a swivel that would meet the stringent criteria: 5-1/4” OD, 8” shaft OD, and capable of 30 rpm at 5000 psi working pressure. The collaboration involved meticulous design, manufacturing, and rigorous testing.
Solution: The Hydrodynamic-Sealed Swivel
The result of their joint effort was the Petrobras Circulating Head. This swivel incorporated cutting- edge Hydrodynamic Seal Technology from Kalsi Engineering. By maintaining a thin film of lubricant during shaft rotation the hydrodynamic seals reduced friction thus minimizing wear. As a result, the swivel could now handle the high pressures and rapid rotations of its extreme offshore conditions.
